Holes 1 to 6 Guide

HOLE 1 - RUIN

A accurate tee shot to the marker pole is the safe line; bigger hitters can draw one over the bunker for a short pitch in to the green. Friendly starting hole

HOLE 2 - ICE VALLEY

The hole requires an accurate tee shot either laying up short of the 2 cross bunkers or an attacking one to carry the penal cross bunkers to give a short iron to a green with steep banks on both sides

HOLE 3 - CRICKET PITCH

Short par 3 requiring an accurate tee shot to avoid the greenside bunkers to a green which slopes left to right

HOLE 4 - RAVINE

A concise tee shot to lay up short of the cavernous ravine to leave an approach shot which requires distance accuracy if the pin is on the front! Do not go long!!

HOLE 5 - PRISONERS GATE

An accurate tee shot to avoid the fairway bunker leaves an approach shot requiring accuracy in to a fairly narrow green

HOLE 6 - THE LODGE

Well placed tee shot avoiding the fairway bunker leaves a straightforward iron to a flat green. Bigger hitters beware of the out of bounds all along the right side of this hole

Holes 7 to 12

HOLE 7 - THE DRIVE (stroke index one)

With out of bounds running all the way down the right hand side of the hole a concise tee shot right of centre leaves an approach shot through a narrow opening to the green

HOLE 8 - REDCASTLE

A sharp near 9 degree dog leg left requires a well placed tee shot to leave an approach shot which can be attacked for those who like the idea of risk and reward

HOLE 9 NEEDLES EYE

Tricky tee shot to a long narrow green. Tee shot preferably below the hole to give a birdie opportunity

HOLE 10 - ROAD HOLE

One of Hawkstone’s most scenic holes facing the follies. A birdie chance for the big hitters requires an accurate shot in to a well bunkered green. Watch out for the ditch short and left of the green which can draw you in. Out of bounds all down the right hand side

HOLE 11 - GROTTO VALE

Spectacular views of the cliffs and a very strong par 4 with no bunkers!
Requires a well placed tee shot to give an approach shot to a slightly elevated green. Par an excellent result

HOLE 12 - THE MOAT

An enticing par 3 with a moat of water surrounding the front portions of the green. A birdie chance after a well controlled tee shot

Holes 13 to 18

HOLE 13 - WATER'S MEET

A blind tee shot just right of the marker pole leaves a modest approach shot
into a receptive sloping green.

HOLE 14 - LAKESIDE

Lovely par 5 along Hawk lake. Tee shot to favour the left side leaves a lay up or for the brave a long 2nd shot to an eagle chance. Best keep your feet dry

HOLE 15 - POLLARD OAK

A relatively short par 4 requires a tee shot with a slight draw from the marker post to leave a short shot in to a green strongly sloping left to right!

HOLE 16 - THE BASIN

Best keep out of the fairway bunkers if you want to capitalise on this short par 4 . A definite birdie opportunity with this sunken green

HOLE 17 - NEPTUNE'S WHIM

A blind tee shot just right of the marker pole will chase down this sloping fairway to leave a shot in to a green sloping left to right. Par a pleasing outcome

HOLE 18 - ALEX'S HAME (named after Sandy Lyle's Father Alex)

A beautiful strong finishing par 4 hole requiring a well placed tee shot right of centre to give an ideal angle in to a well bunkered green. A nice putt to conclude your round on one of Shropshire’s most scenic and challenging golf course. Beating your handicap a great achievement

THE 19TH HOLE

Why not drift over to Lyle's bar and sample some of their refreshments whilst watching others tussle around the 18th Green
