MR KEN MACGILLIVRAY
On behalf of all the members and staff, a very warm welcome to Hawkstone Park Golf Club from myself and fellow Captains Angela (Lady Capt.), Mark (Snr.Capt.) and Alfie (Junior Capt.) We all hope you have a happy time at Hawkstone Park GC.
I am extremely honoured and privileged to have been elected as Captain of this wonderful golf club, founded in 1920 (the club – not me!). We are very fortunate to have two fantastic golf courses of completely different character, set amongst the beautiful historic Hawkstone Follies, affording some fantastic views from many holes. To improve you overall game we are fortunate to have, a less talked about, 6-hoe academy course – which is no push-over, and a driving range.
If you are a first time visitor this website offers just a taste of what Hawkstone Park Golf Club has to offer. Please accept my warm invitation to pay us a visit, as that is the best way to experience and appreciate all the facilities the club has to offer. We have had significant improvements to the infrastructure over the last few years and those who haven’t visited for while will, I’m sure, be delighted with the changes.
We have a full programme of internal competitions and external matches, both friendly and competitive. All of the various sections of the club you will find to be both enthusiastic and very friendly. Members, new and not so new, are encouraged to involve themselves in these. They are a great opportunity to meet, play and mingle with other members from Hawkstone and further afield.
We also hope that you will again take part in our Opens (where members will have a distinct advantage), and we have another full year of social events planned run by Issi and her team and all look forward to seeing and meeting you, and any friends you bring along, as often as possible during the year.
Our charity for the year, introduced at the drive-in in February, is Hope House Hospices, who provide valuable support to children with cancer, and their families in their dedicated centres where they do amazing work but rely hugely on private funding to support their activities. We are holding a number of charity events throughout the year and hope for your support and involvement in, what we intend to be, these fun events. If you could make a small donation via the collection tins in the Lyle bar, Pro shop or hotel (particularly for fines!!) that would be really appreciated.
I think it’s important to recognise that we do have excellent green-staff, led by Ian George, who do some fabulous work despite the challenging financial constraints of the economy and I’m sure we’ll all enjoy the fruits of their labour in the coming months of, hopefully, dry and sunny weather.
2024 was a challenge, with bad weather particularly affecting last season’s preparations, however a lot of work has been carried out in the last months to try to better “Winter Proof” the course and provide a more enjoyable experience for members and guests. You all will have seen the improved vistas of Hawk Lake further to the coppicing of some of the trees along it’s edge on the 14th & 15th holes.
Everything that we try to achieve at Hawkstone Park Golf Club wouldn’t be possible without the great support we receive from the Office, Pro Shop, Hotel & Catering teams, as well our friends members. Many thanks to you all.
Wishing you and your families, a happy, healthy and successful 2025.
Ken MacGillivray
Club Captain 2025
MRS WENDY SIMPSON
I am very honoured to be President of HPGC for 2025/26.
I have been a member for over 30 years and Lady Captain in 2001 and 2021 and served on many committees within our club.
My family has had a huge influence on HP in lots of different ways and hopefully we can hold our past traditions but not forgetting to move forward and build on the long-term success of the club.
We have very welcoming sections within the club those being men’s, ladies, seniors, and juniors where we have competitive and fun competitions throughout the year.
Our house and social team organise many events through the year from 9-hole socials to our annual gala dinner.
A lot of our members give their free time to make the club run smoothly which people don’t see in the background so if anyone has any spare time to help on the various committees please come forward.
Let us hope the sun shines for us all this year and we have fun playing our favourite sport.
MRS ANGELA GWILT
What an honour to have been entrusted with the role of Lady Captain at this special golf club, Hawkstone Park. Having grown up in Shropshire, my working career has been in finance, mainly for agricultural Estates. I’ve played various sports, including competitive tennis, then joined HPGC seven years ago with my husband and was soon bitten by the “golf bug”, also playing with my two sons, the perfect sport to enjoy as a family.
I was soon embraced into the Ladies section by an incredibly friendly and supportive group of ladies, competitive but fun-loving, the best! The Club also has a thriving and varied social scene, something for everyone.
Our joint Captains’ charity this year is Hope House Hospices, a local charity raising much needed funds for children’s hospices.
I’m looking forward to a fun-filled year, making special memories.
MR MARK WOOSNAM
I am honoured to take on the role of Seniors Captain for this year.
I have been a member at Hawkstone Park for just over ten years and have been ‘trying’ to play golf for over 25 years. It doesn’t get any easier but whilst I am competitive there is much more to golf than playing the game. It has taken me to some wonderful places in the UK and abroad. The social side is equally important and I have made many friends, met interesting people and had some really good fun along the way.
The warmest welcome has certainly been here at Hawkstone Park where the atmosphere is always warm and friendly. I play my golf here mainly in competitions on Sundays and Tuesdays along with entering the other comps.
The camaraderie is great and the characters that are here make it what it is. During my captaincy I am very much looking forward to meeting more existing members and welcoming new members to the most friendly golf club in Shropshire – Hawkstone Park.
MR ALFIE WRIGHT
Hi, my name is Alfie Wright and I am studying music at Shrewsbury College. Golf is a passion of mine and has been ever since I first joined Hawkstone at 8 years old. I attended the Junior Golf group lessons and summer camps which allowed me to build friendships and have people to play golf with in my own time. Since I was a young, golf has always played a huge part in my life as my Grandma was Lady Captain and my Grandad being Captain of Ripon City Golf Cub. This passed down to my mother and father which in turn got passed onto me.
I have loved seeing Hawkstone grow as a community in the last few years with the Junior Section being the biggest it has ever been with 20 juniors attending the annual golf gala dinner and the junior events attracting more and more golfers each time!
I am extremely excited and proud to take on the role of Junior Captain this year with the hopes of growing the Junior Section even more. I am a sociable Individual with a goal of making this year another incredible year for Hawkstone !
