2021 LADY CAPTAIN - Mrs Wendy SImpson

Welcome to our 2021 golfing year. It is exactly 20 years since I held the position as Lady Captain of HPGC. How life is so different now, none of us could have predicted this pandemic which keeps us all at home away from the golf course. Let’s hope after this third lockdown and vaccinations received that we can all start to enjoy our golf again.

Off the golf course I can be found working on the farm rearing a few chickens or at home looking after my great nieces and nephews who haven’t started school yet.

I would like to thank President Dale, Captains Stuart, Christine, Gerald & Max and the rest of the Management Committee for all their hard work in circumstances that they haven’t encountered before.

I look forward to working with President Dave, Captains Terry, Roger & Leo and keeping fingers crossed that we will be able to organise some social events in the summer.

Take care everyone, keep safe and I look forward to seeing you all on the golf course soon.

The Ladies enjoyed a Christmas Cracker competition on 7th December, playing an 11 hole Texas Scramble. It was great to be back on the course and there were some impressive scores.

Over the past 6 weeks Golf Professional and Director of Golf Lewis Baker has run a series of ladies lessons for lady members and non-members of all abilities. They have been very well received and supported and were informative as well as fun.

Starting on the range he took us through the bag working on iron and wood shots, then to the chipping and putting, bunkers and the final 2 sessions on the course.

HPGC has the Women in Golf Charter and we are dedicated to promoting golf to women, girls and families so please approach us if you are interested.

Lewis is now re-starting his junior lessons on a Saturday morning.

Team match details ...

Roger Toogood, the Seniors' Vice Captain organised a team match on the 10th September with the Ladies Section led by Lady Captain Christine Apperley. 7 teams competed as an AmAm with 2 men and 2 ladies in each team.

A fun and competitive day was had and the winners were the 'Dream Team' of Dave Samuels, Julie Wales, Paul Harris and Wendy Simpson. Well played everyone.
Pictured are Julie, Roger, Paul and Wendy.

Seniors' Vice Captain Roger commented, "Although the men fought tenaciously, the Ladies were generally considered as being the best putters, most colourful, and most attractive. They were therefore voted by all the men to be the overall winners on the day."

Matches organised by the County include scratch and handicap teams. We also play other local clubs in friendly matches, both ladies and mixed teams. Within our own club, the ladies play the Senior men and this is always a fun event. We also enter some National competitions which can test your golfing ability. There is certainly enough golf to keep you busy here at Hawkstone!

Here at Hawkstone our Ladies Section has a very active, competitive and friendly playing membership both during the week and at weekends. Weekly competitions are held on Mondays with an alternate day of either Saturday or Sunday. Throughout the winter months, we hold weekly competitions with a more 'fun' element, playing Texas Scramble, Greensome and general roll ups. This helps maintain your swing over the winter and also still meeting lady members for an informal round. From April to October you can participate in a monthly Medal and Stableford competition. Trophy competitions are played on a Monday, with an alternate day at the weekend. Our Honours Board Trophies are presented at the Club's Annual Prize Presentation evening at the end of November.

Lady Captains Day is held in June and is one of the most popular days in our playing calendar which includes 18 holes of golf and a dinner and prize presentation in the evening. There are two Opens in May, a Ladies Texas Scramble and a Mixed Team Stableford. We also hold a Mixed Team Texas Scramble in September. Our Ladies Invitation Day is at the beginning of August and is also a popular event.

At Hawkstone we pride ourselves on having a very good relationship with the Mens section and make sure that there are lots of mixed events planned for all to join in with.

2020 CENTENARY LADIES' CAPTAIN Christine Apperley

I joined Hawkstone Park Golf Club in 1995 when Freda Benson was the Lady Captain and after a few lessons I miraculously won her Lady Captain's Day prize! I thought it was easy – how wrong I was!

I am married to Mr Captain Stuart and we are looking forward to being the second married couple in office, after the Chesters in 2014. We are extremely proud to be in post as the Club celebrates the magnificent milestone of its Centenary. As members of the Centenary Committee we have had many meetings over the past 2 years to help produce a full and varied programme for our Club members to enjoy. Along with the fabulous facility of the new Club House, Lyles Bar and our stunning golf courses, Hawkstone Park really is the place to play your Golf this year.

I am a busy person, but I have always made time for the Club and served on several committees. For the last seven years I have chaired our House and Social Committee and along with my merry band, we have been responsible for all things Social within the Club.

On a personal note I trained, qualified and worked as a Chartered Physiotherapist at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt (RJAH) Orthopaedic Hospital at Oswestry and for the last 30 years I have successfully run my own Private Practice. I am proud to announce that our chosen Captains’ Charity for this year will be the League of Friends at RJAH Hospital. It is such an amazing place and we are so lucky to have this resource in Shropshire, but as always they rely on fundraising to provide the best for their patients.

On meeting Stuart I was introduced to the magic of Hawkstone Park, as the Apperley family have a long association with the Golf Club. We celebrated our wedding reception here 40 years ago and have enjoyed other family celebrations here over the years.

We have two children who we are immensely proud of, and along with their spouses, they are always supportive and will be helping us along the way this year.

Throughout this year I am keen to promote the Ladies' section, be approachable, have a fully competitive and fun year and hopefully welcome more ladies to this great sport.

Congratulations to Angela Gwilt and Liz Dutton who beat Wrekin Golf Club on the 19th hole to secure a place in the second round in this National competition. Good luck ladies in the second round!!!
