Following the success of the inaugural Junior Open held at Hawkstone Park in 2019, European Tour Pro Ashley Chesters has announced he will be supporting a second event this summer.

To be staged on Monday 16th August on the club’s Championship Course, the tournament is open to junior golfers with an EGU handicap, maximum 28 for boys and maximum 36 for girls, and is expected to attract many entries following the sell-out event two years ago. Entry costs £25 and includes a meal and prize presentation.

2021 JUNIOR CAPTAIN - Leo Robson

I am currently a year 11 student at Shrewsbury Academy, I will be attending Shrewsbury College in September 2021; the subjects I have chosen to study at Shrewsbury College are Computer Science, ICT and Law.

In my spare time I play many sports, including Golf, Football and Badminton. Before the pandemic and lock down restrictions I would regularly go to watch Shrewsbury Town matches.

I first started playing golf when I was 10 years old. The majority of the time I played with my nan and grandad (who I now outdrive!), or in junior competitions at the club. I have been coached by Keith Williams since I’ve started playing. I have really enjoyed being taught by Keith, his attention to detail and intuitive instruction has enabled me to improve my swing and somehow, he has even managed to fix my grip which at times has been all over the place. It took a while to fix, but we got there in the end.

My goal this year is to work on my short game and get my handicap down.
I am looking forward to being Captain this year, representing the club and helping the juniors.

2020 Centenary Junior Club Championship

Competition and Results

On the 18th July, Hawkstone Park Golf Club Junior Section played their Club Championship from the white tees of the Championship Course.
The best gross score secures the Championship and there is also a best nett prize.

They all played well in the testing wet conditions and the best gross was 78 shot by Tom Welch who won his second Junior Championship, defending last year’s win.

The best nett went to Zach Banks who at the age of 12 plays off a handicap of 10, with 72 and third was Ben Carr who on his 13th birthday scored a net 75.

Thank you to the Junior Organizer Ian Balmforth and to European Tour Player Ashley Chesters for being supportive and donating the prizes.

Well played to all the Juniors with some fabulous golf and great camaraderie they are the future of the Club.

Junior Club Champion Tom Welch gross 78
Zach Banks 82-10=72 best net
Tom Welch 78-4=74
Ben Carr 103-28=75

2020 JUNIORS' CAPTAIN - Max Balmforth

Hi I’m Max!

I am currently studying at Ellesmere College in year 10 and will be taking my GCSE’s in 2021. I love taking part in sport; I play rugby, hockey and, of course, Golf which is my main sport and the one I enjoy the most!

I first started playing golf at Harlech with my Sister and Dad back when I was five years old, I played in junior competitions and often came home after winning a Mars bar or two. Then I went on to playing the Shropshire Pee Wee tour and won a few medals. Last year I was lucky enough to play in the under 14’s Shropshire County Team, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Keith Williams has been coaching me for the last six years "He’s had his work cut out" but he has helped me get down to a 12 handicap and with more of Keith’s help this year my handicap goal is to be off 6 by the end of September, I also want to be outhitting my Dad by the same time!!!!

I am really looking forward to my Captain's year and helping more juniors be better golfers and having fun at Hawkstone Park, especially in this centenary year.

Matches organised by the County Junior section certainly are plentiful and varied. For more details see www.shugc.com. There is also an opportunity to play in the County handicap league, with each club fielding a team of 4 players.

We have an active Junior section at Hawkstone, giving both boys and girls the opportunity to learn and improve their golfing ability. Each month the Junior section play a monthly stableford and monthly medal; there is also the opportunity to play in the Mens and Ladies monthly competitions. Trophy competitions are played at the weekend, at a time to suit all players. Our Honours Board Trophies are preseted at the Club's Annual Prize Presentation evening at the end of November.

Younger players (both U11 and girls U13) can take part in the popular County Pee Wee Tour playing at courses throughout the County during July and August.

Hawkstone Park also hold a Junior Open event, usually in August, endorsed by our very own European Tour player Ashley Chesters.

Congratulations to Max Balmforth on winning The Shropshire Schools County Championship at Arscott in May 2019. Max then accompanied Tom Welch in representing the County in a friendly match vs Nottinghamshire.

Tom Welch also has represented the County at Llanymynech Golf Club and Max and Finn Bowdler have also played for the County in an U14 match at Market Drayton.

Congratulations also to Ben Carr who played in the Mens friendly match at Church Stretton; he partnered his dad, Gary, to win 9 and 7 in their match.
