2022 C&BGA Spring Season Update

While there have been a number of honourable mentions on the leaderboard for us, it has taken 14 outings this season for one of our pairs to reach the top!

On 11 May, playing at Eaton Golf Club, Vice-Captain Stephen Saunders and Seniors’ stalwart Frank Gregory (pictured) posted an impressive score of 44 points to beat 150 other players. And 4th place was secured by Stuart Smith and Nigel Ross with 43 points with Robin Mackness & Bob Parker also featuring in 7th place with 41 points. Very well done all!

A case of History repeating itself!

A year ago, playing at home, HPGC enjoyed four mentions at the top of the leaderboard and on 17 November the feat was repeated in the last 4BBB event of 2021.

Percy Mellor and Alan Molyneux (pictured) topped the leaderboard at Ruthin with 43 points while HPGC pairings took 3rd, 4th & 5th places. And congratulations to Alan in achieving his second victory of the autumn season.

Another Win for Hawkstone - this time away from home

Playing at Upton-by- Chester on 01 September Stuart Smith and Alan Molyneux scored a superb 47 points to clinch victory on a card play-off from a pairing from Portal.

Stuart started the challenge with 6 points in the first three holes followed by Alan counting on six consecutive holes from 4 through to 9 to give them 21 points to the turn. Stuart then played superb golf for the next seven holes before Alan finished the round scoring 5 points on the last two holes to clinch the narrowest of victories. Very well done both!

Another Home Win for HPGC!

For the second time in two months home players have prevailed in the C&BGA on the Hawkstone course the subtleties of which do need some local knowledge.

On 28 July Stephen Saunders and Bob Parker posted an impressive 49 points in the fourball better-ball format to claim victory by 4 shots over a field of 148 players. The pair played almost perfect pairs golf but Bob, in particular, used his shots skilfully. Very well done both!

Meanwhile, at Holywell on 14 July Kevan McGrail and Dave Robson posted 45 points for third place, just 2 points off the winning score.

After what can be described only as a “slow start” to the Spring season, the Hawkstone pair of in form Mark Woosnam and debutant Stuart Smith shot a super 50 points to win the event on 02 June by the astonishing margin of 6 points. But the highlight of the day was Stuart’s hole in one on the 12th Moat Hole - the first ace in an Alliance event since Alan Molyneux’s at Royal St. David’s in 2019.

Stuart’s ace, the 4th of his golfing career, was made with a 9 iron and the first he has actually seen drop into the hole!

Lawrence Ellerby & Robin Mackness scored 42 points for a 6th place mention.
